The final week of the regular season is upon us which can mean only one thing.
Ironic that a week that begs us to post hateful quips, memes, etc about our team’s rival that we also come together to give thanks for all the good we have in our lives.
But that’s beside the point. Back to the fun of degrading those “other schools”.
Clemson bounced back to top Wake Forest last week, punching their ticket to Orlando to defend their ACC Championship. Now they have their sights set on South Carolina.
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney knows just how good the Gamecocks can be in rivalry games, “Defensively they’re playing with a lot of discipline and playing hard and tough. They’re good in the kicking game, so this is a typical Clemson-South Carolina game where you’re going to have to play well. Whoever wins it will have to earn it.”
Virginia Tech and UNC are both on upset alert this weekend as one miscue could cost their respective team the division and the chance to derail Clemson’s season.
Tar Heels head coach Larry Fedora knows his team needs to keep this game in perspective and only worry about the 60 minutes of ball on Friday, “Really, it’s all about this game. Really nothing else matters. We either take care of our business or don’t. We’ll see what happens after that. Really what we control is this week and this game and so all of our preparation is really about us and the team that we play.”
First year Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente knows that beating the Cavaliers could very well mean more than winning the Coastal Division title, “Well, I’m excited about our team, and really regardless of what happens on Saturday, but I also understand what this rivalry means, maybe to a lot of people more than the Coastal Division Championship.”
There is also the Battle for the Sunshine State between #14 Florida State and #15 Florida. The Noles will be looking to do something they’ve never done before, have a 4-game winning streak against both the Hurricanes and Gators at the same time (the team is currently on a 7-game streak against Miami and have won 3-straight against Florida).
FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher knows his team will have its hands full against a Florida team that is depleted but also has a big game against Alabama coming up the following weekend, “Yeah, it’s huge now. I mean, this is the old rivalry — the rivalry that to a lot of folks has meant so much because in the heyday of getting Florida State on an even keel, it’s the 19th time both teams have played. They’re both in the top 15, and they’ve got great tradition, both teams. I mean, it’s one of the great rivalries in all of college football and one you’re very blessed to ever be a part of.”
So when the dust settles Saturday night we’ll know just who will be facing Clemson for the ACC Championship, which teams will be bowl eligible, and which teams will be cruising into the post season on a high note versus hanging up their cleats until spring practice.
Now to this week’s picks. We’re looking to end the season on a high note but we’ll still have one more weekly pick when we preview next week’s championship game.
