Home NCAA Football ACC Week 1 Overview

ACC Week 1 OverviewWeek 1 of the NCAA Football season is in the books, and Free Sports Press probably had one of our better weekends for predictions to start off the season.

We predicted the ACC would lose two of their twelve games this weekend, and we did accurately predict that fact.  We just picked the wrong two games in which the ACC would fall.

Kicking things off last Thursday were the Miami Hurricanes and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.  Both teams cruised to impressive victories, even if they were over mediocre opposition.  But after last year, the conference wanted to make a statement that we wouldn't lose to the "William and Mary"s of the world.

Mission accomplished.

The bulk of the games came on Saturday, lead by the high scoring offense of Florida State as they cruised to a 59-6 victory.

Sadly, we did pick UNC to fall to LSU, but it was a close game.  Could things have gone differently if they didn't have so many players on suspension?  Only time will tell.  But even though it was a loss it does show the grit and determination of a tough Tar Heels team that won't roll over for anyone this season.

Heading into Monday's contests we were boasting a perfect 10-0 record in our weekly picks.

Then a little bit of role reversal took place.

Maryland, which posted a horrid 2-10 record last season, proved it has some "never say die" attitude left in it as they took Navy down to the wire and held strong for a 17-14 victory.  We had them picked to lose 31-27.

Virginia Tech seemed poised to right the ship on winning our "much hyped" season openers against big-name teams but couldn't hold onto the lead, falling 33-30 to Boise State.  We had the Hokies picked to win 42-40.

We're not dejected, though.  We'll analyze this weekend's games and come back looking for that "perfect weekend".

Current Record Through Week 1: 10-2

Some big games to look forward to:

  • #20 Florida State at #7 Oklahoma (FSU is coming off a commanding performance against Samford while OU suffered a letdown in their 31-24 win over Utah State)
  • #13 Miami at #2 Ohio State (Are the Canes back?  This game will be a great litmus test to find out)
  • Virginia at #14 USC (Can Mike London take his team into the Colosseum and come away with a win?)
