Home NCAA Baseball NCAA Super Regional Preview

NCAA Baseball64 teams started the tournament.  As of the writing of this article 15 have punched their ticket to the Super Regionals with just Miami and Texas A&M left to decide their fate later today.

Of the 17-total remaining teams left in contention to head to Omaha, this proves to be a very spirited bunch, filled with a lot of CWS-regulars.

Here's a quick run-down on how we see each Super Regional taking shape.

Tempe Super Regional
Arizona State and Arkansas will battle it out beginning this Saturday at 9pm ET.  ASU is the #1 National Seed and brings supreme power and pitching to the field, along with an outstanding 50-8 record on the season.  Arkansas is extremely tough but I don't see the Hogs making it close.  Look for the Sun Devils to win this one hands down and punch their ticket to Omaha by midnight ET on Sunday.

Clemson Super Regional
This is the only Super Regional to put two #2 Regional seeds against each other.  Clemson and Alabama fought off stiff competition against Auburn and Georgia Tech in their respective regions.  This has been a great ACC/SEC showdown and will create wonderful water cooler banter at the office each day.  Look for Clemson and Kyle Parker (recently drafted #26 by the Colorado Rockies) to go yard several times and win this one in 3 to send the Tigers on a trip to the CWS.

Charlottesville Super Regional
Virginia and Oklahoma are fairly evenly matched on paper.  But when it comes to the big games, it appears the Sooners hold the edge.  The Cavs weren't able to make it through the ACC Tournament or their Regional unscathed and that could prove costly against the defense of Oklahoma.  Poor batting and pitching could cost Virginia a shot at a CWS-birth.  I see this one going the full three games, but am uncertain on the outcome.  Being an ACC faithful I'll root for Virginia to pull it out in Game 3 but my gut just doesn't see it happening.

Myrtle Beach Super Regional
South Carolina comes into this series red hot, scoring 28-runs while allowing only 11 over three games in their Regional.  Coastal Carolina didn't play too bad, either, scoring 56-runs in 5 games and allowing 40.  If Coastal Carolina can get some good innings out of its bullpen then this could be a very close 3-game series.  But if the Gamecocks get a big lead in either of the first two games then its all over.  I see this one going the distance with South Carolina blowing out Coastal Carolina in Game 3 to send the Gamecocks to Omaha.

Austin Super Regional
A couple of traditional powers in Texas square off this Friday when Texas hosts TCU.  Both teams are dead-locked at 49-11 on the year and swept through their respective Regional without any issue.  Texas posted 19-runs in three games while allowing only 3.  TCU had the heavier bat as they notched 36-runs in three games and allowed only 8.  This one really is a toss up.  Its not "David vs Goliath" in this series.  Its "Goliath vs Goliath".  I'm going to have to give the nod to the home team, though, and pick Texas in three over TCU.

Tallahassee Super Regional
If you had picked FSU to win the ACC Tournament and sweep through their Regional tournament, as a road team, a month ago I would have called you a dreamer.  But Florida State is gelling at just the right time.  And going against a team like Vandy seems to be a great test for FSU to make it back to Omaha.  The 'Dores are not a pushover team by any means.  But I'm not sure they have the "big game" experience to continue their run to the CWS.  I see FSU keeping this series close and winning this in two, very close games.

Los Angeles Super Regional
UCLA posted 27-runs in their Regional and allowed only 6 in three games.  CS Fullerton had its back to the wall right from the beginning after dropping their first game to Minnesota, 3-1.  But tough grit and "never say die" attitude brought them back and allowed them to progress one step closer of getting back to Omaha.  Both teams have had similarly successful seasons, but I see CS Fullerton coming away with the win in this and heading to Omaha.  I'm still not sure if it will go the full 3-games or not.  But UCLA's only chance of winning this is by selling out every at-bat and driving in as many runs as possible.  A close game favors CS Fullerton.

Gainesville Super Regional
While Florida doesn't currently know its opponent at the time of this article, I'll write on both Miami and Texas A&M to be fair.  Florida had a dominating performance in their Regional, posting 32-runs and allowing only 5 over three games.  Should A&M beat Miami and face Florida, I give the series to the Gators without a doubt.  But if Miami holds onto its current 3-2 lead and wins then I would give the series to Miami in three (very) hard fought games.  The Canes bring a little bit extra to the plate when they come to bat.  And their pitchers have a little more gas in their tank to go deeper into a long game without getting winded or losing much heat on their arm.  I'll post an update to this article with my final pick after the Miami/A&M game is concluded.

Game Update: Now that Miami has eliminated Texas A&M and moved on to face Florida in the Super Regionals, I am officially putting my money on the Canes to advance to the CWS.  I don't see Florida having the depth to take on a team as talented as Miami.  Plus their experience in the world of "Post Season Baseball" is an added bonus.
