NEW YORK -- George Steinbrenner, who rebuilt the New York Yankees into a sports empire with a mix of bluster and big bucks that polarized fans all across America, died Tuesday. He had just celebrated his 80th birthday July 4.
Steinbrenner had a heart attack, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Fla., and died at about 6:30 a.m. ET, according to multiple reports.
"It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing. He passed away this morning in Tampa, Fla., at age 80," the Steinbrenner family said in a statement.

The Florida State University will retire the jersey (#10) of former Seminole and Tampa Bay Buccaneer star linebacker Derrick Brooks at its football game against Clemson on November 13th. Brooks was a two-time consensus All-American at outside linebacker for the Seminoles where his blend of speed and athleticism set a new standard for the position. He starred at FSU from 1991-94 leading FSU to its first national title as a junior and earning first team All-ACC honors as a sophomore, junior and senior. He was named the ACC Player of the Year in 1994 and was a finalist for the Butkus, Lombardi and Football Writer's Defensive Player of the Year Award in both 1993 and 1994.

Almost two weeks ago, Gamecocks coach Ray Tanner was soaking up the atmosphere during the opening ceremonies for the College World Series when he let his mind drift. "It dawned on me, it would be wonderful to go deep into this thing and be around at the end," Tanner said. "I know the new stadium will be very special and a great facility.
OMAHA, Neb. - TCU (53-13) overcame a five-run deficit and scored eight runs in the eighth inning to defeat Florida State (48-20) in an elimination game at the College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium. The big blow from TCU came in the eighth inning as Matt Curry connected on a grand slam giving the Horned Frogs a 9-7 lead that they did not surrender to the Seminoles over the final two innings. TCU will now face UCLA in another elimination game on Friday at 3:30 p.m. while the Seminoles' season comes to a close.

Florida State has produced two Heisman Trophy winners, and one runner-up in school history. Both of those winners also have a national championship on their resume.
