OMAHA, Neb. -- South Carolina provided a perfect send-off for Rosenblatt Stadium.
Almost two weeks ago, Gamecocks coach Ray Tanner was soaking up the atmosphere during the opening ceremonies for the College World Series when he let his mind drift.
"It dawned on me, it would be wonderful to go deep into this thing and be around at the end," Tanner said. "I know the new stadium will be very special and a great facility.
Brooks to Have FSU Jersey Retired

The Florida State University will retire the jersey (#10) of former Seminole and Tampa Bay Buccaneer star linebacker Derrick Brooks at its football game against Clemson on November 13th. Brooks was a two-time consensus All-American at outside linebacker for the Seminoles where his blend of speed and athleticism set a new standard for the position. He starred at FSU from 1991-94 leading FSU to its first national title as a junior and earning first team All-ACC honors as a sophomore, junior and senior. He was named the ACC Player of the Year in 1994 and was a finalist for the Butkus, Lombardi and Football Writer's Defensive Player of the Year Award in both 1993 and 1994.

PRETORIA, South Africa -- Landon Donovan scored a stunning goal in the first minute of injury time, advancing the United States to the second round at the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Algeria. With the U.S. perhaps three minutes from elimination Wednesday, Donovan brought the ball upfield on a counterattack and Jozy Altidore's shot on the breakaway was tipped by Clint Dempsey into goalkeeper Rais Bolihi. The rebound went to Donovan, who kicked it in from about 8 yards for one of the biggest goals in U.S. soccer history. "I've been through a lot in the last four years," Donovan said half an hour after the end, crying and his voice cracked. "I'm so glad it culminated this way. When you try to do things the right way, it's good to get rewarded."

OMAHA, Neb. - Florida State was limited to four hits and left nine runners on base in an 8-1 loss to TCU in the first game of the 2010 College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium. The Seminoles will now play Monday, June 21 at 4:30 p.m. EST against the loser of Saturday night's game between Florida and UCLA in an elimination game. That game will be televised by ESPN2. The Seminoles were led by four different players who had one hit each and their bullpen that allowed two runs and struck out six in five innings pitched. Sean Gilmartin, Florida State's starting pitcher in game one, was tagged with the loss. He fell to 9-8 on the year.

TCU Rallies and Eliminates FSU from the CWS

OMAHA, Neb. - TCU (53-13) overcame a five-run deficit and scored eight runs in the eighth inning to defeat Florida State (48-20) in an elimination game at the College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium. The big blow from TCU came in the eighth inning as Matt Curry connected on a grand slam giving the Horned Frogs a 9-7 lead that they did not surrender to the Seminoles over the final two innings. TCU will now face UCLA in another elimination game on Friday at 3:30 p.m. while the Seminoles' season comes to a close.

OMAHA, Neb. -- To Florida State's Mike McGee, pitching is hard work and hitting home runs is fun. He mixed business and pleasure Monday, leading the Seminoles to an 8-5 victory over Florida in a College World Series elimination game. McGee hit a tie-breaking three-run homer in the third inning, laid down a squeeze bunt in the fourth and moved in from left field to pick up the save after Florida made things interesting in the ninth.

Eight teams begin competing for the College World Series championship in Omaha on Saturday, a quest that runs for nearly two weeks and will literally seem like a second season to the two teams that advance to play a deciding best-of-three title series. But regardless of who emerges from the dogpile as NCAA Division I champion on June 29 or 30, they will be at least partially upstaged by the venue that showcases their achievement. This is the curtain call for Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium, which is hosting its 61st CWS but will give way in 2011 to a new downtown stadium.
